hello! the book which has been looked forward to for a long time by harry potter fans the cursed child finally has published. and i have finished reading it. firstly, i'll make a review without spoilers. then, there will be a review with spoilers. first of all, i want to dispel very big misunderstandings about this book. because, lots of people were disappointed when they bought this book.
because they were expected that it would be a novel. but rowling has explained this before. this is not a novel. this is not the eight book. this is only a script of a play. literally, it is a script. it was written in that way. they have just decided to publish that script. at the same time, this script was not written by rowling herself.
someone called jack thorne wrote it. of course, rowling was in cooperation with the author during the whole writing process. they were always in touch with each other. however, this book was not written by herself. but still, i think the problem starts with... this book does not remain as a fanfiction so... because rowling has announced this book as a official eight story
in other words, even if this book was not written by rowling events on this books are a follow-up to the story which we know before. so we must accept the events as real in that world. because rowling has explained in that way. and i'm little... ok, i know rowling made explanation such as "don't misunderstand, i didn't write this this is not a novel" and so on.
but this is a problem, okay? in the back of the book, it says "the eight story. nineteen years later" the book has announced by this kind of advertisement. that's why i can understand why the fans got disappointed. my general review on the book is, it is a huge disappointment. because i started reading with a huge excitement and enthusiasm. i'm sure all the potterheads will start this book in the same way. seeing ron, hermione and harry's name makes people excited after all these years. but i want to say that, in the beginning
story is getting in a good way there are some good details i really like it at the beginning however the main subject of the book, the thing which they wanted to do are soooo nonsense. especially, in the and i was like "what was that?" i don't understand how rowling allowed such a nonsense things
eventually, there is a logic in harry potter world in itself all the spells, potions have logical reasons behind them but this cannot be seen in this book. everything was written as they wanted. that's why there are nonsense results. i read thousand times better fanfictions up to today, seriously. as i said before, if this play would remain as only a script there would be no problem for me. i would only say "fans wrote it, rowling approved it. that's all, ok"
but, because rowling has announced it as a official story now all of the nonsense things are actually the real events which happen in the harry's future and which we must accept in that way. that's the reason why i don't like the book at all. i am disappointed hugely. this book has created a big excitement for harry potter fans obviously. like me. because most of us are like "write anything about harry potter, and we will read anyway"
so of course read it in general there are some good details and some good stuff. i think you should not have high expectations. frankly, i was so angry with rowling when i finished the book. why i was angry? yes, she didn't write the book but eventually while this book was written, she knew all the things. ans she was in touch all the time.
hence, i couldn't understand how she tolerated that the characters she created are become one dimensional, how they acted apart from their characters and how she permitted the things which are contrary to the rules of the world she created. i wish to see that rowling intervene much more. even if someone else writes something about harry potter, or even it would be fanfiction i think they should write based on the events and characters
in harry potter world which we know. now, i'll make a review of the things i like and i don't in the book with spoilers. so, if you don't want spoilers you can turn off the video now. one of the main characters in the book is young son of harry potter, albus severus potter. the story begins with the time when he is heading to hogwarts for the first time. at the same time, it is the first year for rose as well who is the daughter of hermione and ron.
they both get on the hogwarts train. in the train, albus meets the son of draco malfoy, scorpius malfoy. two of them become friends. this is one of the details that i really like in the book. i think the friendship between harry potter and draco malfoy's son is a very good detail. but rose doesn't give a shit she warns albus continuously saying
"albus, he is the son of malfoy. you should not be friends be with him" albus does not listen rose. they are at odds. another main character of story is he is my favorite character in the story. one of the good sides of the story is this character. because he is the opposite of his father. he is so genuine, friendly,
and even he knows people don't like him, he does not become so unhappy, very clever, wise he is like a resemble of hermione. he knows eveything, reads a lot of books. they created such a sweet and nice character. i love scorpius malfoy. on the other hand, albus is such a teenager.
with all of his reactions and mood and eveything. and friendship of two of them is pretty good. i really like how they create a character who is different from his father. anyways... later, they arrive at hogwarts, the sorting hat sorts them into houses. however, everything starts with here. because while everyone expects to see the son of famous harry potter will be a gryffindor
albus gets sorted into slytherin. after that, albus gets really upset and shocked he thinks "how this can happen?" he becomes very pessimistic person. the most important detail of the story is sorting albus into slytherin. because that leads conflict between his dad harry. harry says he doesn't care he never blast away his child. but albus continuously thinks "i'm not a perfect child for you,
admit that, don't try to change me, that means i'm a bad person" and so on. in fact, albus put himself in a bad position by himself. scorpius, on the other hand, whatever he lives through he never acts like a rebellious teenager. that's why i really like scorpius. and there's a rumour about scorpius it is said that, draco malfoy couldn't have children and because of that, to sustain malfoy heritage,
he uses time turner supposedly, in fact, voldemort is the father of scorpius (!) this the rumour. this rumour is the stupidest one that i heard in the wizarding world. but of course lots of people believes it. that's why everyone tries to get away from scorpius since he may be the children of voldemort. but it is not real of course. albus and scorpius are really close friends.
but everybody always thinks how the son of famous harry potter is a slytherin by the way they are seriously famous. harry, hermione and ron are like celebrities. people want sign from them. also hermione is the minister of magic ron runs the fred and george's shop. harry also works in the ministry. ministry has destroyed all the time turners in years. but after years harry finds one of them.
they hide it immediately. they try hard to hide it from everyone. but still gossips are spread eveywhere. and one day, father of cedric diggory goes at harry's house. hey says to him "my son cedric died because of you okay you won the battle, everyone sees you as hero but i want cedric back i heard that ministry has a time turner
by using it let's bring cedric back, please" harry answers "no, there no such a thing. where did you heard it? it is a lie. i'm sorry for cedric too but it's not possible to bring him back." albus eavesdrops on this conversation and he thinks, by the way he knows ministry has a time turner he thinks "my father lied to that man. there is a time turner but he doesn't want to help him. why he is doing such a thing?"
he starts questioning his father. "everyone sees harry potter as hero but he has some mistakes too death of cedric was one of the mistakes. that's why i must find a way to bring cedric back" he thinks. at the same time, there is a nurse who looks after cedric's father delphi she says "i'm cedric's cousin." she meets with albus in harry potter's house.
and she says "i work there, you can visit whenever you want" and they become friends. before albus leave for school, his father wants to talk with him and get along with him but they always give cold shoulder to each other. then they have a huge argument after that albus says his father "i don't have to be like you.
people can't choose their father. i wish you wouldn't be my dad." harry can't stand it anymore and says "i don't want a child like you as well." now their relationship completely breaks down. even if harry says he is so sorry albus really gets angry with his father then he decides to bring cedric back certainly he thinks "i have to correct my father's mistakes"
while albus and scorpius are going hogwarts, albus tells eveything to scorpius he says "let's escape and don't go school. let's find cedric's cousin delphi. in this way, we can sneak into ministry and stole time turner to go back in time to save cedric" actually big events starts at this point the trio sneaks into ministry by using polyjuice potion and transform into harry, hermione and ron,
achieve to stole time turner. even if rowling says "time cannot be changed" they change time like crazy and create parallel realities. we saw time turner for the first time in the prisoner of azkaban hermione was using it very carefully. even, before they went from future to past past harry and hermione felt the stone
that throw from their future self. but they couldn't understand what was it. whereas it was like that because it happened in that way because of future themselves this is a cycle it is a fixed point. things were happening at that time, in that way because they were intervened from future i know it might be little confusing. in the story, that is not a concern. i can't tell how they play with the time...
of course there are some consequences new realities occur but these realities for example are not affect scorpius or albus at all. there should be some changes with them as well only in one reality albus is unborn. but this "changes in time" thing happen in such a nonsense and unsatisfying way. and this is the basis point of the story that's why i think the book isn't good.
they go back triwizard tournament to keep cedric alive. they think "if he fails in the first task he can't continue on the tournament. thus, he would be alive" if you remember, first task was the dragon they go there, fly cedric's wand off by saying "expelliarmus" they think he might fail however, they wear durmstang robes in the past and they come across with hermione.
hermione suspects from them. at the same time, they realize the time turner works only for five minutes. after five minutes, they find themselves in present again. but because of the change they did, there exist a new parallel reality if we talk about what happens in the first parallel reality... cedric is still dead. because after he failed the first task, he got better in other tasks but the most important and nonsense thing is, i think
when hermione bumped into that two durmstang students and suspected she rejects the ball proposal of viktor krum instead, she goes ball with ron two of them have great time but later ron dances with padma patil and has a better time with her. two of them fells in love and gets married (!) hermione becomes more morose,
strict person and becomes a professor in hogwarts. defense against the darks arts professor. her character is unbelievably different than before. she is a very bad person bla bla. albus also gets sorted into gryffindor one of the most important problems in the story is changes in the these new realities. ok, these changes in the parallel realities but still they must be based on structure of the characters
it is not like that at all! dou you really think ron can be fall in love with someone else even if he goes the ball with hermione? i think, no. do you think hermione can become cruel teacher because of the pangs of love? i think, no! for example she always gets points from gryffindor she does some nonsense things. at he same time, if these changes happen
albus is a gryffindor in this reality so there is a possibility that albus and scorpius might not be such a good friend and not decide to change past. with the first reality in fact, the main reality of the book would collapse. one of the ruined characters in the book is harry potter he is like a someone else, really. he thinks, his son albus and scorpius must stay away from each other.
because he thinks scorpius can harm his son and he is a danger around him. he goes to mcgonagall. by the way, mcgonagall is the headmistress of hogwarts harry seriously threats her. he says "you will watch albus and scorpius all the time you will intervene when you see them together. " mcgonagall says "but i can't do it, how am i suppose to do?" harry says "you are gonna. otherwise, i will use all the forces of ministry"
he says this to mcgonagall he also says something really bad to mcgonagall "you don't understand of course since you don't have any children" he says who the fuck are you harry? does he can say something like to mcgonagall, really?! there is an unbelievable change by the way, he has an argument with malfoy as well. you think malfoy is right this time. beforehand, malfoy goes harry and says
"can you do something as ministry to dispel the rumours that my son's father is voldemort" harry does not accept that. "these rumours are not related to ministry. i can't do anything" he says afterwards, when two of them realizes their sons didn't go to hogwarts they meet again. malfoy and harry start discussion harry says something which should not be said even in the fight he says "perhaps your son's father is really voldemort, ha?"
harry does nonsense shit everytime. espesically, i hate the changes in harry. on of the character that is changed is draco malfoy however, i like the changes. it was obvious that after the battle of hogwarts he will has a more orderly life he will be a more mature person. and gets aways from the dark side. he was not in it with his own will aldready.
because of the fear of voldemort, he was in the dark side actually. so, now, in this story malfoy is a good father, very fond of his son he can do anything for his son. at the same time, death of his wife made him very upset because of that... malfoy is in the good side this time. i like the changes of the chracter since i found them logical in the first parallel reality, albus and scorpius get togetger again
even though harry doesn't want now, they think that they should change the second task of the triwizard tournument this time but okay let's say they change the time first time and create a new reality but in this reality, actually at the beginning versions of albus and scorpius also must be change how they aware of eveything? perhaps they wouldn't aware of it. maybe they wouldn't have meet at all. they would hate each other even though they met before so there are lots of possibilities.
but we don't see any kind of thing. it's like everything is the same for them. in the second task, they decide to change... cedric was making a balloon to breathe under the lake they think if they humiliate cedric somehow, he might give up the tournament and not continue. they uses an engorgement charm cedric starts to grow and grow and grow everyone is laughing
because they can only stay for five minutes they find themselves in another reality again. one of the things that i didn't like at all is the second parallel reality according to this reality, when albus and scorpius changed the time because cedric humiliated in the triwizard tournament, he becomes a death eater (!) do you think it is possible seriously? imagine, because of a humiliation, cedric says "oh! i got so humiliated. now i have to be a death eater!"
but he is. then he kills neville in the battle of hogwarts. because of death of neville, nagini has never been killed. because nagini is alive, voldemort has never been death. and he lives. thus, harry is dead. because harry is dead, albus has never been born. dolores is the headmistress of hogwarts. in this second reality, scorpius find himself alone because albus is unborn.
scorpius is the most popular guy in the school, everyone calls him scorpion king bla bla but we should note that, if scorpius is scorpion king and a popular guy he should not be aware of these events but they didn't care about the fact, scorpius is the same scorpius he is looking for the ways to solve it. he thinks that the only person who can believe him is snape and finds snape. when he finds snape, he realize that hermione and ron
are rebellious and snape is colloborating with them. he tells eveything to snape. "i came from the future. i changed things like that. i did like this" so on and snape believes it. they find how to restore second reality and scorpius thinks that if they undone what he has done in the past, then eveything is gonna be okay. somehow, they make it. in the new reality we return the beginning of the story.
albus is born again. later, they meet with delphi. they finally realize delphi is not the person they think. in fact, delphi is not a cousin of cedric but she is the daughter of voldemort at the same time, harry, hermione, ron, ginny and draco figure out who delphi is. because lots of things happens, they realize their children are trying to save cedric by using time turner they find cedric's father.
he says "i don't have a niece like that. i don't have any niece at all." they understand that delphi is lying and learn that she is the daughter of voldemort. delphi's purpose is... there is a prophecy according to this prophecy, cedric must live in order to make harry dead and voldemort live, kind of thing. so she is with them because of this.
imagine, voldemort has a daughter! how logical! delphi takes children with her and goes back triwizard tournament, the last task. some things happen there too, they come across with cedric and cedric saves children bla bla. delphi goes crazy, she does not know what to do. she uses time turner again and this time they are in the year 1981 the year which voldemort went their home in order to kill harry. then she brokes the time turner! albus and scorpius are imprisoned in time.
isn't it so nonsense to having voldemort a daughter? i don't know. i really didn't like it. this children is from bellatrix btw. and bellatrix is married with another man you know. besides, do you think voldemort is someone who makes a baby? really?! think about it. even in the most cheezy fanfictions, it doesn't happen. delphi is trying to resurrect voldemort she wants to see his father bla bla bla by the way, delphi can fly without anything.
i don't where this idea come from... so whole thing is actually about how delphi tries to save his father. when albus and scorpius stay in the past, i only like the plan that they make to be saved it is a nice plan. the plan is, there is a blanket which lily potter wrap harry in it. this blanket is the only thing that future harry has from his mother. they manage to write a message on that blanket their time and place are written in that message.
future harry realize when and where their children are. however, since all the time turners destroy by ministry, they don't know what to do. here, draco malfoy involves. he says "i have a secret time turner. we can use it." that's it! harry is like "oh, okay then. let's save the children" they travel in time recklessly and do eveything to change it... it is really irritating. i find this story as something created with very simple logic.
i think the story become worse from that point. yes they manage to go back in time. they find the children somehow. they start to think what they should do to defeat delphi. then they realize this firstly they think the reason why delphi choose that date is to kill harry before her father but then they realize delphi is doing nothing and voldemort is not showing up they observe the james and lily's house all the time. they see baby harry for example.
they realize, actually delphi doesn't want to kill harry she wants to make voldemort do nothing at all. because if he doesn't do anything, the prophecy wouldn't be real. because voldemort thinks harry is going to kill him, he tries to kill first and the prophecy becomes real in that way. if he wouldn't though that way, there would be no prophecy. voldemort would be alive. because of that, they realize delphi only wants to meet his father. a brilliant idea comes their mind. (!)
they say "if one of us transform into voldemort, we can trick delphi make her believe he is her father. then we can catch her." let's say it is okay. they say "but how can we tranform into voldemort?" of course with the polyjuice potion. as you know, polyjuice potion brews in one month. for this potion, it needed something from the person you want to tranform such as hair. they have nothing from voldemort.
but they still say "all of us know how voldemort looks like. we are all powerful wizards. we can do it anyway." and they make it, really... normally it takes one month to make polyjuice potion. they make it without even a strand of voldemort by imagining their minds. and harry transforms into voldemort. he says "let me do it. because i know how to speak parseltounge it would be easier to trick her."
he meets with delphi. after that, harry tricks delphi in voldemort look, she thinks he is her father... on the one hand, delphi's ability to fly is nonsense on the other hand, making polyjuice potion immediately is another nonsense afterall, they defeat delphi. for example, harry sees real voldemort is coming and killing his mother and father yet survival of himself, he watches. but he doesn't intervene.
because this what should have been done. they should not do anything. in this way, eveything backs into normal. harry and his son albus gets along with each other. our story ends in this way. i almost never talk about ron during the story. because ron is the most unnecessary character in the story. okay, ron likes making joke, even in the unnecessary situations. but he is such an useless chracter in this story.
the only function he has is making joke time to time that's all. this irritates me too. there some details that i like in the story such as friendship of albus and scorpius they are so close, i like it. in general, the main topic of the book is problematic. keeping cedric alive, voldemort has a daughter and so on.
unfortunately, this book couldn't satisfy my expectations
